For young Jordanian students between the ages of 14 and 16, the realm of game development reveals an exhilarating and gratifying prospect. Through engaging in this venture, they not only interact with technology captivating, but also cultivate essential skills that will shape their triumphant future. Encouraging these budding minds to embark on the creation of their own mobile games not only ignites the flames of their creativity but also endows them with the invaluable capacities of problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking. Together, these skills will serve as the bedrock of their success, propelling them towards a future filled with accomplishment and fulfillment.

To make the most of this, particularly in education, we must explore creative ways to leverage technology’s power. One highly effective approach is to encourage students to embark on the exciting journey of mobile game development. This not only captivates their interest, but also enables them to apply their learning in practical ways.

Developing mobile games serves as an engaging and interactive learning experience for students. It not only makes education enjoyable, but also allows students to see the real-world applications of the skills they acquire. By creating their own games, students gain proficiency in vital digital-era competencies like problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking.

The process of game development naturally hones problem-solving abilities in students as they navigate and conquer technical challenges. Moreover, working on game projects fosters teamwork and collaboration, essential skills for success in today’s interconnected world. Additionally, students develop sharp critical thinking skills as they analyze feedback and user experiences to enhance their games.

Game development provides students with a platform to unleash their creativity. They can design unique characters, craft captivating storylines, and invent challenging gameplay levels. This creative outlet not only allows students to express themselves, but also provides an opportunity to explore different aspects of storytelling and game design.

Once students have completed their games, they have the freedom to share them with friends, family, and even publish them on the widely accessible App marketplace. This not only boosts their self-confidence and sense of accomplishment but also enables them to showcase their talents to a broader audience.

By integrating mobile game development into education, we empower students to transition from passive technology consumers to active creators. This approach equips them with valuable technological skills while also preparing them to adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape.

In 2011, the exciting initiative, the App Challenge, was introduced under the guidance of the esteemed King Abdullah II Fund for Development in Jordan. This program was specifically designed to ignite the curiosity and passion of young Jordanians between the ages of 14 and 16 who are eager to explore emerging technologies. The primary focus of the App Challenge is to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to create and self-publish their mobile games, opening doors to endless possibilities.

The program employs a well-structured format, typically consisting of engaging workshops or classes. During these sessions, students are introduced to game development and design fundamentals. They dive into intriguing subjects such as programming, graphics design, and sound design, gaining a comprehensive understanding of game creation’s multifaceted aspects. In addition, the program goes beyond the technical aspects and delves into topics such as project management and marketing. This broader knowledge empowers students to comprehend the entire process of publishing and promoting their games.

Students receive invaluable guidance and support from experienced instructors and mentors throughout the program. They have the incredible opportunity to work on their unique game projects, allowing their creativity to flourish. These projects are nurtured in a collaborative environment, where students can exchange ideas and receive constructive feedback. Moreover, students may also have the chance to participate in competitions or showcases, enabling them to present their creations to a broader audience and gain recognition for their achievements.

The App Challenge is a remarkable platform for school students with a passion for game development to acquire new skills and gain practical experience in this exciting field. It opens doors to a world of possibilities, nurturing their talent and paving the way for future careers. For those driven by their love for game development, the App Challenge allows them to transform their passion into a thriving profession.

The App Challenge offers a fantastic chance for young Jordanian students to enhance their skills in developing mobile games. This immersive experience allows them to create and release their games while sharpening their expertise in Unity development, art, game design, user experience, and business development. The ultimate objective of this competition is to empower the youth of Jordan, unlocking their creativity and potential in the digital world while contributing to the growth of the local community through the knowledge economy.

In the App Challenge, young students form teams to passionately create mobile games focused on specific themes. This platform brings together competitors from all over the Kingdom, allowing them to showcase their talents and gain recognition for their hard work.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there! The winning games get published and promoted and in certain cycles, the victorious teams receive funding of up to 5,000 Jordanian dinars. This financial backing catalyzes continuous development, empowering them to establish a mini gaming lab right in their own backyard.

The App Challenge is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of young minds as they take the reins of technology and pave the way for a brighter digital future in Jordan. It encourages community service and inspires students to share their achievements, igniting a spark of inspiration among their peers. With this empowering platform, tomorrow’s game developers are setting sail on a journey filled with boundless possibilities. The following is the yearly flow of the compeition :

  • Announcement: The annual competition schedule is announced in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Each school must assemble a team of 3–4 students and appoint a teacher to serve as a supervisor.
  • Orientation: Accepted students will participate in an orientation day, during which they will be introduced to the history of mobile video games, the latest technology, game design, and storytelling.
    • As part of the orientation, students will take a pop quiz and create an interactive game based on their learning, allowing the App Challenge team to evaluate the team’s skills, creativity, and attention to detail.
  • Training: The competition begins with a training program in which students are introduced to the basics of game development, including programming, graphics design, and sound design. The training program also covers important aspects of game design, such as mechanics, gameplay, storytelling, and how to create marketing strategies.
    • After completing the training program, students can work on their game projects for two months. During this time, they will have access to resources and support from instructors and mentors, to help them bring their game ideas to life.
    • To ensure that all game elements are the students’ original creations, the Maysalward team will verify that students have not copied or received external assistance in developing their games. Teams that do not meet these standards will be disqualified from the competition.
  • Pitching Day: The competition allows students to display their skills and creativity to a panel of industry experts. Students will present their projects to the jury panel without the presence of their teachers, allowing them to share their thoughts and experiences without any external pressure.
    • Throughout the course, students are taught the best practices for pitching but are not directed toward a specific approach. They can choose the most effective way to showcase their project, using tools such as PowerPoint presentations, videos, and even dramatic performances, allowing students to express themselves and their ideas independently and fully.
    • Teams are given 5 minutes to present their projects and 15 minutes for questions and discussion with the jury panel. Based on the competition criteria, the panel follows a standardized evaluation process, using a scoresheet prepared by the King Abdullah II for Development and Maysalward teams.
  • Awards: The competition winners are announced annually at the Annual Pocket Gamers Connection Jordan Gaming Summit, hosted by the Jordan Gaming Lab and the Jordan Task Force. The top projects are showcased to the audience before the winners are revealed.
    • The winning teams will each receive $5,000 to establish a mobile gaming lab at their school. These non-personal awards encourage students to engage in community service and share their achievements with their classmates for years to come.
    • In addition, the teams in the top three positions and their teachers will receive personal prizes such as smartphones or tablets.

Post App Challenge and Support

The Jordan Gaming Lab, which operates in six cities, including Amman, Irbid, Aqaba, Karak, Zarka, and Maan, is a non-profit project managed by King Abdullah II for Development in partnership with the Maysalward Team. It has supported Jordanian game developers since 2011 with technical support and resources.

Students who complete the App Challenge are followed up on by the Jordan Gaming Lab to ensure that they continue to progress in their game development. Participating teachers are also invited to join the Jordan Gaming Lab’s Training of Trainers (TOT) program, which aims to help teachers build their game development skills to run similar workshops in their schools and communities.

Game projects developed through the competition are published to the app store by the gaming lab, and students have complete control over updates and maintenance of their games.
