Overview of The App Challenge in Jordan

The App Challenge is a pioneering national competition in Jordan, launched in 2011 under the direction of His Majesty King Abdullah II and managed by the King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD) in partnership with Maysalward, the region’s first mobile game studio. The program is specifically designed for Jordanian school students aged 14 to 16, aiming to build their capacity in mobile app and game development and to foster a new generation of digital creators.

Goals and Objectives

    • Provide students with practical skills in mobile game development, covering programming, design, user experience, and business basics.

    • Promote innovation, creativity, and teamwork among young participants.

    • Introduce students to the digital gaming industry and enhance Jordan’s profile in global technology and gaming fields.

    • Empower youth to become active contributors to the digital economy.

Structure and Process

The competition consists of several phases:

    1. Orientation: Students from across Jordan are invited to attend sessions where they learn about the competition and the fundamentals of game development.

    1. Training: Selected participants attend intensive training camps, typically lasting five days, that focus on programming, game design, and the use of industry-standard tools, such as Unity.

    1. Development: Student teams develop their mobile games over a six-week period, often addressing specific themes or social challenges.

    1. Evaluation and Awards: Teams present their games to a panel of judges. Winners receive recognition, funding (which can be up to 5,000 Jordanian dinars in some years), and opportunities to publish their games on app stores.
